Short lesson: How to set new years resolutions the right way
New Years Resolutions = Goals.
Here’s how I define Goals: What you are working towards, and who you need to become in the process.
We need to break our goals down in order to achieve them.
Each goal has two parts:
Part 1 - The Outcome (Result): WHAT you are working towards
This is the specific, measurable result you want.
Part 2 - The Process (Behavior):WHO you need to become
These are the recurring behaviors (actions, habits, and routines) needed to get the result.
When we know what we are working towards, and who we need to become in the process we can achieve our goals.
Next, it’s best to have only a few goals. Less is more.
One Personal Goal: Health, relationships, hobbies, and personal growth.
Examples:
- Run a marathon
- Attend a transformational retreat
- Read 12 books this year.
One Professional Goal: Career, business, or creative projects.
Examples:
- Get promoted to a management role.
- 25 clients in my online business.
- Launch a YouTube channel with one video per week.
One Financial Goal: Income, savings, investments, and financial milestones.
Examples:
- Pay off $20,000 in debt
- Save $30,000 for a down payment.
- Earn $100,000 income.
To recap:
- Our goals have two parts (outcome and process).
- We have 3 core goals for the year (personal, professional, and financial).
Now it’s time to set your New Years Resolutions (Goals for 2025).
Ask Yourself:
“What are the 3 most impactful Goals I need to achieve this year to make my 1-Year Vision a reality, and put me on track for my 5-Year Vision?”
Personal: “What’s the ONE Personal Goal that, if accomplished, would make everything else easier and help me become the person I envision?”
Example: My Personal Goal is to run a marathon (Outcome) by running 5 days each week, finding a coach for my nutrition, and joining a run club. (Process).
Professional: “What’s the ONE Professional Goal that, if accomplished, would make everything else easier and move me closer to realizing my Vision?”
Example: My Professional Goal is to enroll 25 clients in my new online business (Outcome) by reaching out to 100 people per week, posting on social media daily, and studying to improve my skills for 30 minutes each day (Process).
Financial (Money): “What’s the ONE Financial Goal that, if accomplished, would make everything else easier and bring me closer to realizing my Vision?”
Example: My Financial Goal is to save $50,000 (Outcome) by tracking my finances daily, automating $4,200/month into savings, and lowering my living expenses by 25% this year (Process).
How good does it feel to know exactly what you are going to achieve, and how you are going to do it?
Now all that’s left is the work.
